Lunar Look at the Coming Week from the Celestial Planting Calendar Team

Sunday, Monday, June 21-22, 2020

The waxing Moon in Gemini brings with it descending forces as the Moon has reached its nodal point and is starting to descend lower towards the horizon.  This is a favorable time for nurturing and planting climbing and creeping plants such as melons and cucumbers, combating above ground pests, pruning young fruit trees as needed such as lilacs.  This pruning is done after they have flowers and helps set their buds for next year and makes them bushier.  It is a good time to clean out barns and harvest fruit and veggies for drying.

See Lorraine’s Instagram page on how to grow “no dig potatoes.”  Lorraine piles up grass clippings and stray and places potatoes in those mounds.  Sprinkle coffee grinds on top and around the pile to help prevent rust. (

Tuesday, Wednesday, June 23-24, 2020

The waxing Moon is Cancer (leaf) with descending forces creates an air quality of damp and wet.  This is a favorable time for seeding leafy veggies and herbs such as basil.  It is also growing for mowing lawns and watering.  The best time to water is in the early morning or late afternoon.  Add compost to flower gardens and combat above ground pests.  In it unfavorable to plant anything that wants to grow tall.  Avoid storing plants in the root cellar at this time based on the air quality of dampness and wet.

Thursday, Friday, June 25-26, 2020

These two days have waxing Moon in Leo (fruit) with descending forces.  The air quality is warmth.  The sign of Leo is the most parching in the whole zodiac.  It is a good time to gather herbs such as motherwort which strengthen the heart.  Either the herb can be made into a tincture or used immediately.  Remember drying herbs in a waxing Moon may create mold.  Plant cultivated field crops such as buckwheat on damp soil, seed lawns or plant flowers.  This is a good time to plant fruits that do not require a lot of water as Leo is a parching sign.  Plant flowers and veggies such as cucumbers that grow quickly.  This is an unfavorable time to make sauerkraut because it may dry out too quickly.

Saturday, Sunday, Monday, June 27-29, 2020

The waxing Moon moves into Virgo (earth/root) an earth sign (root) with descending forces until 9am on Monday.  The air quality is cool and earthy.  In general, Virgo is favorable for all kinds of planting and transplanting in the garden.  Seed lawns, repot indoor plants, start or spread compost around veggie gardens for example potatoes.  Spread compost in fields after hay has been cut if rain is in the forecast.  In is unfavorable to plant lettuce, make pickles or preserves or store vegetables.

Monday, June 29, 2020

The waxing Moon is in Virgo (see above) until 9am.  The rest of the day is in grey due to the Moon being in perigee.  With the Moon being closer to the Earth the gravitational and electro-magnetic forces are stronger.  Take a rest from gardening.

This weekly forecast is based on the experience, knowledge and wisdom first set out by Rudolf Steiner and then elaborated on by Maria Thun.   Lorraine Schmid of Thyme Again Gardens has incorporated these teachings on her farm in South Eastern Ontario.   She offers these tips for improving plant quality and work-related efficiency in gardens and farms.   While these tips relate mostly to northern temperate climates, they have a more universal application.
