Lunar Look at the Coming Week from the Celestial Planting Calendar Team
Tuesday, May 26, 2020
Today the waxing Moon is still in Gemini (flower). This is a nodal time between the ascending and descending forces. The quality this day is bright, airy and light. Plant anything that wants to grow tall or climb, such as morning glory, sunflowers, or hops. Sugar snaps like warmer weather and some varieties grow tall. Also plant any kind of flowers. Mow the lawn if you want to increase growth of the grass.
Wednesday, May 27, 2020
The waxing Moon has moved into Cancer (leaf) with descending forces. The air quality is damp and humid. This is a beneficial time to plant leafy vegetables such as chard, kale and herbs such as sage and chives. It is a good time to combat above ground pests such as aphids. One way to deal with aphids is to place fresh cut nettles in water for 24 hours and use the liquid to spray on the plants as a tea for pests. It is also a good time to prune plants that are grown for leaves to encourage more leaf growth such as bayberry and raspberry bushes that are grown for medicinal purposes. Cut the lawn and water indoor and outdoor plants. Dowse to find well water. It is unfavourable to plant plants that want to grow tall such sunflowers, morning glories, hops and pole beans. It is unfavourable to prune fruit trees and shrubs as they will bleed too much. Do not make preserves nor paint outdoors.
Thursday, Friday, Saturday, May 28-30, 2020
On Thursday the Moon is in Cancer until 9am (see Wednesday for details). Then the Moon transitions into Leo around noon. Leo is associated with the fruiting part of the plant. The Moon is waxing and descending until Saturday, May 30th. The air quality is dry, warm and fiery. This is a beneficial time to harvest herbs, especially herbs for the heart. Plant grains if the field is still damp. Prune tomatoes and other fruit bearing vegetables and flowers. Seed grasses, lawns and pasture fields. Plant fruits such as melons and cucumbers. Water well because Leo is a fiery sign.
Sunday, Monday, May 31 and June 1, 2020
The waxing descending Moon is in Virgo (root). The air quality is associated with cooler weather. The ground may feel cool. This is a beneficial time for all types of planting, seeding and transplanting. Virgo days in general are good for any type of garden work that requires a lot of strength. Turn the compost. Apply compost to garden plants. As Virgo is a root sign this is a good time to combat underground pests. It is unfavourable to plant lettuce which will bolt quickly and also unfavourable for preserving.
This weekly forecast is based on the experience, knowledge and wisdom first set out by Rudolf Steiner and then elaborated on by Maria Thun. Lorraine Schmid of Thyme Again Gardens has incorporated these teachings on her farm in South Eastern Ontario. She offers these tips for improving plant quality and work-related efficiency in gardens and farms. While these tips relate mostly to northern temperate climates, they have a more universal application.
