Lunar Look at the Coming Week from the Celestial Planting Calendar Team

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, July 13-15, 2020

After 4pm EDT the waning Moon has moved into Aries (fire/fruit) with ascending forces.  The air and day quality is warmth.  This is a good time to harvest and store grains and cereals.  You can plant or sow anything that is meant to grow fast and/or for immediate use.  Plant or sow underground vegetables.  Preserve and ferment fruits and vegetables.  Dead-head or cut back perennials that have finished flowers for example daylilies or even rhubarb.  Apply compost to fruit or vegetable plants if needed.  It is also a good time to paint outside, set fence posts, bring in the harvest, make butter, mulch and weed the garden.

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, July 15-17, 2020

After 4pm EDT on Wednesday afternoon, the waning Moon has moved into Taurus with ascending forces.  The air and day quality is cool and earthy.  This is an ideal time to start projects that require extra strength and perseverance.  Plant winter and root vegetables such as potatoes and turnips.  Harvest vegetables that are suitable for storage, for example freeze garden peas.  Start or turn the compost pile, combat in-ground pests and harvest what needs to dry.  This is a good time for building outside as well as weeding and mulching.  It is unfavorable to forage and/or harvest roots.

Saturday, Sunday, Monday, July 18-20, 2020

At 9am EDT the waning Moon crosses the Sun’s path (North Node) and at the same time it moves into Gemini.  Gemini is an air sign and associated with the flower component of plants.  Gemini is also at the nodal point between the ascending and descending forces.  Now the Moon is moving lower towards the horizon (descending).  The air quality of Gemini is light and airy.  This is a good time to drink nettle tea as it cleanses the blood.  You can also make a 24 hour nettle extract and use this liquid to combat above ground pests such as aphids and flea beetles.  This is a favorable time for painting outside, setting fence posts, weeding and mulching plants that have flowers.

By 2pm the Moon has moved into Cancer and has entered into the New Moon phase.  This waxing Moon is now suitable for mowing lawns and pruning hedges as there will be a tendency to slow down the growth of these plants.  It is also conducive for watering all plants, dowsing for a well, combating above ground pests and planting or sowing leafy vegetable but not lettuce.  Cut back leafy vegetables such as swiss chard and kale.  Paint outdoors.  Preserve and store away all kinds of vegetables.  This is an unfavorable time to plant anything that wants to grow tall.  It is also unfavorable to cut back or prune trees.

This weekly forecast is based on the experience, knowledge and wisdom first set out by Rudolf Steiner and then elaborated on by Maria Thun.   Lorraine Schmid of Thyme Again Gardens has incorporated these teachings on her farm in South Eastern Ontario.   She offers these tips for improving plant quality and work-related efficiency in gardens and farms.   While these tips relate mostly to northern temperate climates, they have a more universal application.
