Lunar Look at the Coming Week from the Celestial Planting Calendar Team

Monday and Tuesday, April 27 & 28, 2020

On Monday, the Moon crosses the Sun’s path from 10am to 3pm.   This sensitive time is better spent on doing shopping or other chores than gardening.  After 3pm the Moon moves into Gemini (flower) and it changes position in the sky from ascending to descending.   It feels light and airy.  Now is a good time to plant and seed any climbing or creeping plants and flowers.  Annuals and other tender plants can be started in the greenhouse.  It is also a good time to plant or sow medicinal flowering herbs, such as chamomile.   This is a time to combat pests, such as aphids by soaking nettles in water for 24 hours and using that liquid to spray the aphids.  It is a favourable time to add a modest amount of compost soil to plants as a fertilizer, but do not add too much as you will invite aphids.  It is also a good time to clean out the animal dwellings and shelters.   I have found this time useful to plant flowers, vegetables and herbs that I want to grow specifically for seed.

Wednesday and Thursday, April 29 & 30, 2020

The Moon is in Gemini from 3pm on Monday until 3pm on Wednesday the 29th.  Moon in Cancer (leaf), waxing with ascending forces.  The damp days of Moon in Cancer will not let the ground dry out completely.  This is a good time to encourage leaf growth by pinching off some of the leaves.   A good time to plant leafy vegetables, especially spinach.  Spinach likes cool air and a waxing Moon.  Also good for cutting the lawn, watering house plants and dowsing for water.  Above ground pests such as aphids, flea beetles, whitefly and cabbage worms can be dealt with.  The waxing Cancer Moon is unfavourable for planting vines, pruning fruiting trees, making preserves and jams, painting outside and setting fence posts.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday, May 1 to 3, 2020

The Moon moves into Leo by Friday at 9am and the air feels warm.  This is a waxing Moon with ascending forces.  This is a good time to sow grains on the damp soil, cut lawns, plant fruit trees and shrubs, grow cucumbers and tomatillos in the greenhouse and plant strawberries and raspberries and apple, pear and cherry trees.

Sunday to Monday, May 3 & 4, 2020

The Moon moves into Virgo at 6pm on Sunday.  Virgo is associated with root forces.  The Moon is waxing and ascending.  Expect cooler days.  This is an excellent time for turning compost, planting trees that grow high and shrubs and hedges that you want to grow fast.  This is a good time to do any kind of work in the garden related to planting and transplanting.  For example, you can transplant house plants, seed lawns, and combat moles.

This weekly forecast is based on the experience, knowledge and wisdom first set out by Rudolf Steiner and then elaborated on by Maria Thun.  Lorraine Schmid of Thyme Again Gardens has incorporated these teachings on her farm in South Eastern Ontario.  She offers these tips for improving plant quality and work-related efficiency in gardens and farms.  While these tips relate mostly to northern temperate climates, they have a more universal application.
